About I-NMT: Integrated Neuromuscular and Myofascial Techniques

About the I-NMT Series: I-NMT places emphasis on combining neuromuscular technique with myofascial components, piecing together how different body regions and their respective pain patterns relate to each other. Emphasis will be on the application of spine, atlanto-occipital, dural tube, and sacral joint range of motion techniques, thus integrating the relationship of the skeleton and it’s fascia into an NMT approach. Ask about becoming a certified I-NMT practitioner. We offer two certifications: I-NMT Fundamentals and Advanced I-NMT practitioner.

Emphasis is on the application of spine, Atlanto-Occipital, and sacral joint range of motion techniques in all sessions, thus integrating the relationship of the skeleton and it’s fascia into an NMT approach. Each student will receive thorough training in neuromuscular technique and philosophy. Rather than focusing solely on isolated trigger-point release, more emphasis will be placed on regional release in combination with compression and trigger-point release. Learn neurological laws that govern neuromuscular concepts and techniques, study macro/micro anatomy and physiology, myofascial integration, connective tissue properties of tensegrity, solation, and piesoelectric effect. Study postural distortions and how precise I-NMT treatments improve posture and reduce stress on internal organs.

I-NMT: Abdomen, Torso, and Breath

Clinicians often run into a wall when they apply neuromuscular techniques in isolation such as treating a shoulder condition by solely treating shoulder mobilizers. Learn to treat abdominal cavity musculature and fascia for low back/hip, torso/thoracic, and shoulder conditions. Explore diaphragm and intercostal treatments that enhance breath capacity and reduce postural stress and painful deviations. Learn about breath work as the body’s internal massage therapist.

I-NMT: Thoracic Outlet and Shoulder Mobilizers

Learn how postural distortions that deviate from homeostatic posture cause pain and inflammation in the shoulder region and, if not addressed, often prevent the full rehabilitation of this region. Discover why it’s essential to properly release antagonist muscles to maintain shoulder integrity. Explore how distortions in the shoulder girdle contribute to postural dysfunction in the neck, thorax, and pelvis. Study the thoracic outlet and brachial plexus and thoracic inlet and how they relate to treatment of the neck, shoulder and arm pain.

I-NMT: Rotator Cuff and Upper Extremity

Study the rotator cuff muscles in isolation, separating them from the shoulder mobilizers such as trapezius and serratus anterior. Study physiological changes in the bone, ligaments, and joint that cause or interrupt adequate healing of shoulder joint injuries. Study entrapment of tendons such as the long head of the biceps. Learn why nmt treatment of the triceps is essential for treatment of elbow conditions. Spend hours in detailed treatment of forearm and hand musculature (as a massage therapist, you most certainly will appreciate this part of the course!).

I-NMT: Neck and Internal Jaw

Learn precise methods of treating anterior cervical regions, specifically along the bodies of the cervical vertebrae and anterior occipital-C1 junction. Learn to apply internal jaw treatments to muscles contributing to TMJD and headache and facial pain patterns. Find out why treating the anterior neck is essential to any clinical treatment of headaches and neck conditions, shoulder conditions, and jaw dysfunction. Learn effective techniques for treating disorders such as whiplash, head forward posture, upper thoracic pain, and TMJ.

I-NMT: Lumbar & Pelvis

Learn how tilt, rotation, torque, flexion/extension and projection affects spinal and pelvic alignment and pressure on the sacroiliac joint. Learn to rebalance fascial and muscular pelvic tonus surrounding the body’s center of gravity. Learn to recognize how other regions and their fascial components can cause low back pain. Specific routines are introduced that will effectively treat frustrating low back/hip conditions.

I-NMT: Thigh and Lower Extremity

Anterior/Posterior/Lateral/Medial compartments of the thigh and of the lower leg. Spend time studying the knee and ankle joints and applied treatments. This course is not to be missed for those practitioners specializing in sports and orthopedic treatments.

Become I-NMT Certified

  • To be eligible to certify in I-NMT Fundamentals, students must have taken these four (4) I-NMT classes. By no means should this give the impression that the other two classes are less important; every I-NMT class has a lot to offer the I-NMT practitioner. Required Classes for I-NMT Fundamentals Certification:
    • I-NMT: Abdomen, Torso, and Breath
    • I-NMT: Neck and Internal Jaw
    • I-NMT: Thoracic Outlet and Shoulder Mobilizers
    • I-NMT: Lumbar and pelvis
  • Students who are confident that they have grasped the concepts and feel they can attempt the certification process before taking the Thigh and Lower Extremity and/or the Rotator Cuff and Upper Extremity may attempt to do so. It must be understood that missed material offered in these tw0 classes may affect the ability of the student to certify.
  • A written examination, practical, and portfolio are required to certify in I-NMT Fundamentals. Testing fee: $150 and includes practical examination.

To test as an Advanced I-NMT practitioner:

  • Must be a certified I-NMT Fundamentals practitioner or equivalent certified NMT practitioner (with another certification group – special terms to be worked out per inquiring student).
  • Must have completed all 6 courses (or special terms for a practitioner certified by another NMT group – terms determined per student)
  • Assistant teacher for one I-NMT class
  • Proof of taking a Postural Assessment class (Hands On Health offers one but outside CE courses are accepted).
  • Testing fee: $150

Movement Repatterning and Foam Rolling

A Self-Massage Technique for You and Your Client

Foam rolling is a great tool for home-care between massage therapy sessions. At Hands On Health, we call it the client’s home massage therapist. We have found that it greatly assists in muscle and fascia health maintenance and can make a treatment program more effective and less uncomfortable. Your client can “take their massage home” by working with a foam roller for stretching, positional release, and self-massage of painful and tight muscle regions. Foam rolling massage is a wellness technique and should not be used if you are in an acute phase of healing or in post surgical rehabilitation.

Benefits for the Therapist
o Self Care!
o Assists in body mechanics making you a more effective therapist
o Keeps injuries down and you up
o Another tool in your tool belt
o Can do in-between clients for a quick pick-me-up

Benefits for the Client
o Self Care! Promote proactive movements
o Keep tissues healthy between sessions
o Makes massage sessions less “ouchy”
o Can do on own time on busy days
o Save money
o Can be used to aid in sports training

In this class you will learn:
o Foam rolling for erector spinae, hip flexors and abductors, and adductors, deltoid and serratus anterior
o How to teach to foam rolling to healthy clients and when to refer
o Positions for wrists and spine while performing foam rolling
o Timing of a session when you teach a client
o Multiple uses of foam rollers

CE Student Testimonials

Testimonial for Ethics class:“I liked the open forum with guided topics approach to your class.” “I’ve taken his class several times and each time I find the teachers to be very knowledgeable. Being challenged (and guided) to work through my ethical dilemma was refreshing and fruitful.”

Testimonials for I-NMT courses: “The student to teacher ratio allowed me a lot on one on one contact with the instructor. I feel I am well prepared to go home and begin to safely practice treatment of the upper cervical region and anterior neck. thanks for the excellent preparation!”
“Great anatomy review. Great individualized instruction and hands-on assistance. Greatly benefited from more experienced classmates.”
“I learned a lot from the real life clients that came in to present their case and receive bodywork. Their feedback helped me begin to master this skill.”
“It was challenging to locate obscure muscles. I liked when the instructor placed my hands exactly where they should go and helped me visualize where I was heading.”
“I’m from Tennessee and it was nice to visit Raleigh, meet so many dedicated students, and have a resource so close by (well, kind of close by – ha ha) where I can reach out and ask for help.”
“I’ve taken classes with several of the teachers in Hands On Health’s Bodywork Therapy Seminars program. I find all the teachers very accessible and full of practical knowledge.”
“Very good rapport with group and control of the group. We were a lively bunch and you managed to reign us in most of the time. Well done!”
“Thank you, thank you, thank you for breaking up the classes into smaller segments [15/16 CE vs 21 CE hours]. Your courses are chock full of so much and my head didn’t feel so much like bursting this past class. I’ll be back and plan to certify in I-NMT.”
“I never knew how many layers of detail I could achieve when working on the low back and hip. My clients will benefit greatly from this advanced knowledge. When’s your next class?!?

Testimonial: Foam Rolling and Movement Repatterning:
“I had no idea what to expect from this class when I signed up. I went away with a greater knowledge of what to look for and do when treating someone whose balance is affected. I loved being introduced to movement repatterning and now I know who to refer (and how vital it is to refer) to when noticing balance issues. I love your connections to balance, exercise, and aging. I thought I knew everything about foam rolling … I wasn’t even touching the tip of the ice berg. Great class! Can’t wait to teach foam rolling to my clients, especially the runners.”

Testimonials for Orthopedic Assessment Class and Posture Assessment Class:
“I love how I can mix and match classes that all relate to each other. The focus on a niche like I-NMT and how they incorporate short courses [Ortho Assessment classes, Posture classes, and Movement Repatterning/Foam class] that all relate to acquiring clinical or specific based treatment knowledge gives me the opportunity to fully explore clinical therapies.”
“Thanks for the short courses. They help me fill out my CE requirements. When will you be offering classes online?”
